Public events scheduled in the Charles City Area

THURSDAY, SEPT. 16

Immaculate Conception Elementary School 125th Anniversary Mass begins at 9:15 a.m. at the amphitheater by the Cedar River in Charles City with Archbishop Michael Owen Jackels celebrating; followed at 10:15 a.m. by student presentation of past school days and burying time capsule. An open house will be held at the school, 1203 Clark St.,  from 4:30 to 6 p.m. with guided tours and a brief presentation given every half hour.

Deadline to file as a candidate in the Nov. 2 city and school board elections is 5 p.m.; turn in city nomination papers to the county auditor’s office, school board nomination papers to the school secretary’s office.


SATURDAY, SEPT. 18

Charles City CleanUp Day — individuals and groups are encouraged to pick up litter and waste in homes, businesses, streets and public areas and unite with more than 180 countries for World CleanUp Day.

Charles City FFA Prospect Cattle Show begins at 7:30 a.m. at the Floyd County Fairgrounds.

Marble Rock Historical Society Pioneer Activities Day — 1 to 4 p.m. at Beelar Cabin, including rope making, pressing apples for cider, dyeing wool, making corn husk dolls, shelling corn, sawing logs and churning butter; grilled chicken by the Whitetails in the gazebo beginning at noon, with proceeds to the Park Board.

Autumn Artistry Festival in Osage, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., includes car show, activities for kids at the library, more than 100 vendors and crafters throughout Main Street and the Mitchell County Fairgrounds, food vendors, live music; shuttle bus available.


MONDAY, SEPT 20

Summit Carbon Solutions carbon capture pipeline public meeting at 6 p.m. at the Floyd Community Center in Floyd, for Floyd County property owners affected by the proposed pipeline, and others interested in the project.


TUESDAY, SEPT. 21

Charles City will observe International Day of Peace with a “Minute of Silence — Moment of Peace”; church bells in town will ring a minute before noon, then at noon all are encouraged to observe a minute of silence; at 12:05 p.m. a community Scripture prayer service for peace will be held at Immaculate Conception Church, 106 Chapel Lane, open to all.


FRIDAY, SEPT. 24

A football tailgate fundraiser meal will be held 5 to 7 p.m. by the Knights of Columbus of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Hampton, before the football game against Charles City, in the church parking lot across the street from the east end of the  football field; meal choice of pork sandwiches or hot dogs plus beans, chips, beverage and dessert.


REGULAR EVENTS

• Produce giveaway Saturdays through September near the Lions Rose Garden in Charles City; set-up from 8 to 10 a.m.; produce distribution from 10 a.m. to noon; free.

• Charles City Downtown Farmers Market, Blunt Street along Central Park through mid-October; 9 a.m. to noon Saturdays and 3:30-6 p.m. Wednesdays.

•Messiah’s Food Pantry, 9 a.m. to noon Wednesdays and noon to 3 p.m. Fridays; 102 N. Main St., Charles City, access at the rear of the building; information call 641-220-3694.

• Public bingo, Tuesdays at the Charles City Senior Center; doors open at 5:30 p.m.
