The Weekly Word: God’s unchanging love in changing times

By Pastor Paul Phillips, Gospel Lighthouse Church, Floyd

God’s heavenly throne is eternal, secure, and strong, and his sovereignty rules the entire universe.

— Psalm 103:29 (TPT)

April has been a very unusual month, and I trust you all are well and doing the best you can during these unprecedented days. Something that is helping me during these changing times is to reflect on God’s unchanging character.

Absolute truth is something that is true at all times and in all places. It is something that is always true no matter what the circumstances. It is a fact that cannot be changed. Let me give you an example of God’s unchanging love for you.

In John 3:16 we read, “For God so loved the world…” The word “love” that is used in this verse is Agape love, which is the highest and most special kind of love.

It occurs when an individual sees, recognizes, understands and appreciates the value of a person. He holds this person in great esteem, awe, wonder and sincere appreciation.

That’s how God looks at you. There’s nothing stronger than His love for you. This kind of love will, if necessary, even sacrifice itself for the sake of the person it cherishes.

God sent His Son, Jesus, to be a sacrifice for you and me on the Cross of Calvary. There is no greater love than Calvary’s love. God proved His love for all of the people of the world right then and there.

When I first came to faith in Christ, in my early 20s, the one thing that stood out was Jesus’ absolute love for me. He really loved me. It was exactly what I had been searching for, someone to love and understand me, even while I was confused, needing direction and living a sinful life.

Jesus drew me to Himself and revealed His great love for me. He filled my heart little by little with His unchanging love. This changeless Savior changed my life. Millions of people all around the globe have experienced the same thing.

My prayer for you reading this today is that you will comprehend what is the breadth and length and depth and height of God’s love for you. It is beyond human understanding — that God would pour out his love in your heart by the Holy Spirit. May His love settle you, direct you, forgive you, and give you a new life in Christ. Receive Him right now.

The lyrics of Jennie Wilson’s timeless hymn “Hold to God’s Unchanging Hand” are as relevant today as when she first penned them:

Trust in Him who will not leave you
Whatsoever years may bring
If by earthly friends forsaken
Still more closely to Him cling

Hold to God’s unchanging hand
Hold to God’s unchanging hand
Build your hopes on things eternal
Hold to God’s unchanging hand
