The Weekly Word: God’s love is guaranteed

By the Rev. Daniel Larson, Pastor, Cross Lutheran Church

Disappointment will come to each of us sooner or later. It comes when the car breaks down or when we lose our job; when the doctors couldn’t cure our loved ones, or when our friends or investments disappeared.

So, what do we do about these situations? We will try to limit our disappointments so that they won’t lead to total disasters. We do this by making promises and resolutions to ourselves and others.

We may buy certain types of insurance. We do our homework before making big decisions. We buy things that say, “guaranteed or your money back.” We will go to doctors that others have recommended to us.

We want some sense of security in what happens in our lives, don’t we? We want things we can count on; something that is stable, safe and guaranteed.

But even with all the protections, certifications, insurances, promises and money-back guarantees, we are still left looking for more security, aren’t we? The things in this life that threaten our security seem endless to us.

How often have we said to ourselves, “There’s always something … What am I supposed to do now? … If it’s not one thing it’s another … Either it’s this or that.”

It is at times like these that we should take comfort from these Bible verses:

“I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

– Romans 8:38-39

And notice what Paul says here. He tells us that neither this, nor that, will be able to separate us from the love of God.

In other words, God’s love is faithful, stable and dependable love. And the proof of this is found in what God did for us by sending His Son to us. Jesus came and died on the cross and rose again.

Our sins were not too much for Him to bear. Even death itself could not hold Him in His grave.
Satan could not stop Him from completing His mission of redeeming the world.

Oh, many of the religious leaders of His day hated Jesus. One of His own disciples denied Him. The rest abandoned Him. And a vocal majority of the people crucified Him.

But did any of this prevent Jesus from keeping God’s promise to save us? No. God’s love prevailed for the whole world, and now whoever believes in Jesus has eternal life!

Do you see? You may have many troubling disappointments in your life, but God’s love will never disappoint you. Nothing in all creation can separate you from God and the power of His love in your life.
This is because Jesus came, died, and rose again to set you right with God. This is your security, for God’s love is guaranteed.
