Staff Report

The Charles City Municipal Band sent out an invitation to local musicians this week.

“Join us for a summer of fun during our 35th season,” the open letter from the band’s board of directors says. “We welcome everyone in the whole family. Come and play every other note, every other measure,  or every other song. Bring mom, dad, the kids or grandkids for a unique opportunity to make music together.”

Members of the Charles City Municipal Band Board of Directors Teresa Bertelsen, Susan Jacob, Joel Thompson, Scott Nolte and Shirley Kelly.

The lack of an instrument is not a problem, the board said. The band will help you out.

Charles City’s Municipal Band dates back to the Iowa Band Law, which allowed a tax to provide a community band. This most recent incarnation of the Charles City Municipal Band has been around since 1981.

If you are interested, the band invites you to attend its first rehearsal of the season at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 25,  in the Charles City High School band room. Rehearsals will be in the band room and will finish by 9 p.m.

Jake Gassman, director of bands for Charles City High School, will conduct the first concert  and Scott Stroud, director of bands at Nashua-Plainfield will conduct the Fourth of July Concert. The June 19 concert director has yet to be determined.

The concerts will be held in Central Park, except for the Fourth of July concert, which will be behind the Charles City Public Library prior to the fireworks.

Here is a list of rehearsals and concert dates:

—  May 25 and June 1 rehearsals (7:30 p.m.); June 5 concert (7:30 p.m.).
