Students feature science careers in community exhibit

Research presentations spotlighted Thursday

Donna Forsyth’s Exploring Science Careers class will present their projects to community members and classmates from 8-9 a.m. Thursday in the high school library. Just as the name of the class suggests, students’ projects consist of in depth research findings of their chosen careers.

“What we would have to study at school, classes that we were going to have to take, college classes,” Sydney Keifer Exploring Science Careers student, said of the research she and her classmates conducted.

The class takes a rigorous approach to analyzing various science related careers.

Students are not only required to research their careers, but they also need to organize job shadowing opportunities.

“We all had to do two job shadows this trimester, we could choose whatever we wanted,” Keifer said. The class is aimed to help guide students toward prospective career paths.

“I took the class because I wasn’t sure I wanted to go into a science career. It kind of helped me decided that I didn’t,” Keifer said. “It gave me a chance to definitely explore more options and think about what i really wanted.” According to Keifer, most of her classmates chose medical related careers for the shadow and research project, with a handful who chose to shadow Zoetis and Cambrex employees.

Keifer and her classmates will spend the first hour of their morning on Thursday sharing their research with community members. According to Forsyth, the 22 students in the class have already invited roughly 40 community members to the career fair to hear the presentations. Although specific invitations have been sent, the public is more than welcome to visit with students about their projects.
