COMET BASKETBALL: CLEAR LAKE 65, CHARLES CITY 35

CC falls to Clear Lake in season opener

Staudt, Hoffman lead CC scorers in loss on the road

Tuesday night’s 65-35 loss to Clear Lake was a wake up call for the Comets, said coach Danielle Rippentrop on the bus ride home.

“It’s a reality check for the girls, and for me,” Rippentrop said. “It shows we can’t take any plays off in practice. We’ve always got to be going hard.”

With 15 turnovers in the first quarter alone, and 19 in the first half, Rippentrop said the Comets will be working to handle pressure better in practice this week. Total, the Comets turned the ball over 31 times Tuesday night, opposed to Clear Lake’s 11. Clear Lake was also able to turn those forfeits into 22 points.

Rippentrop said players like Megan Staudt, Taylor Hoffman and Jodie Sindlinger — a sophomore — helped show there were some bright spots in the loss.

Staudt had nine points and was 3-for-8 from the floor. Hoffman was 3-for-4 from the 3-point line and also had nine points.

Sindlinger played a team-high 26:09 minutes and grabbed five rebounds while going 2-for-4 from the floor.

Charles City did have a potential advantage at the charity stripe. Clear Lake only shot seven free throws all night, but was a perfect 7-for-7. The Comets, on the other hand, went to the line to shoot 17 free throws, but only came away with eight points.

There’s a lot of season left, and Rippentrop isn’t worried about a 30-point season beginning defeat.

“There were glimpses of good things all night,” Rippentrop said. “And the good thing is, all the mistakes are fixable.”

The Comets have some time off for the holiday, game wise, and won’t play again until they head to Garner-Hayfield, Ventura on Nov. 30.

That game tips off at 7:30 p.m.
