Calling all carolers: Rehearsals open for tour

Friends, CCHS singers prep for singing throughout town

Rehearsals open Tuesday for community members interested in spreading some Christmas cheer in support of the Charles City High School vocal department.

The caroling group is open to friends, family members and alumni, said choir director Brad Beale. Carolers will bundle up for a Dec. 15 trip around Charles City, visiting around 10 houses as a fundraiser for new department choir robes. Although it’s the second year for the caroling group, this is the first time singers will visit private homes for a cozy performance.

“This is our first foray into people signing (their homes) up,” Beale said. “We’re still getting people who are contacting me about being interested.”

The tradition started as a way for parents to connect with their kids’ department beyond attending concerts, Beale said.

“Parents get to know me and see what their kids are doing everyday,” Beale said. “I started this up to kind of bridge that gap a little bit, and it worked out really well. People really enjoyed it.”

The department will have four 30-minute open rehearsals for participants on Tuesdays and Thursdays, Dec. 1, 3, 8 and 10 from 6 to 6:30 p.m. in the high school choir room. Attendance is not mandatory, Beale added, and carolers can choose to stay on melody or branch out on parts. A local taxi service is donating time to drive carolers from house to house.

“We had a lot of interest last year, and I’m hoping we have just as many if not more this year,” Beale said.
