School Board to ponder China partnership, $550,000 in cuts

State funding to drop after decrease in student population

Mandarin is thought to be the world’s most popular language, with the amount of first- or second-language speakers growing north of 880 million people. It could someday become a language option for Charles City students –– at least, that’s one of the hopes for a potential China Partnership that the district school board will consider during Monday night’s meeting.

Dr. Dan Cox will present information on the partnership, the board agenda says, including how many Chinese students could take part, and what opportunities would be available to Charles City students. Dr. Cox is also expected to share his experience visiting Buenos Aires in an administrator- exchange program from this fall.

Board members will also consider cost-saving measures to reduce around $550,000 in expenditures for the 2016-2017 school year. Reductions are needed after a loss of 10.77 students in the district, the agenda says. Final recommendations will be presented March 21.

Agenda items also include a calendar revision to fit parent/ teacher conferences around the Feb. 1 Iowa Caucuses, and a recommendation to approve new early retirement policies.

The School Board meets Monday, Dec. 14 at 6 p.m. in the Charles City Middle School cafeteria.
