PAWS, FCCF establish endowment

An estate gift has enabled PAWS — the Floyd County Humane Society — to establish a permanent endowment fund to support its activities such as veterinary care (including spay/neuter surgeries, vaccinations and medication), food, supplies and building and grounds upkeep.

The fund is set up through the Floyd County Community Foundation.

PAWS has been a refuge for local homeless dogs and cats since 2000. The shelter is on Shaw Avenue in Charles City, and features separate quarters for dogs and cats, an exercise yard, and office space. A total of 13 dogs and 35 cats can be housed at the shelter at one time.

The shelter is constantly being upgraded, and anyone who has expertise in maintenance and building improvement projects is welcome to help, a news release from the Floyd County Community Foundation said. Recently, a storage shed was installed near the shelter.

The release added: In the spring, efforts will be made to expand the dog exercise area. Eventually, the organization would like to build a new facility. However, the current most important project is to obtain new dog kennels that are both functional and sanitary.

PAWS is managed by volunteers, including a shelter manager and 12 regular volunteers who help with daily cage cleaning, and weekly adoptions. Additional volunteers help with the many PAWS activities throughout the year.

PAWS also has a new partnership with Dr. Frost and Dr. Mallen from the Avenue of the Saints Animal Hospital who provide veterinary care to all animals who are brought to the shelter, the release said.

As a no-kill shelter, PAWS accepts and provides needed vet care to all cats and dogs that the Charles City Police Department and animal control officer bring them. Often the animals brought to PAWS are in poor health from being on the streets or living in neglected homes. All animals receive needed veterinary care. They are also socialized and given lots of love before being placed in carefully screened adoptive homes, foster homes or rescues. Since inception PAWS has adopted out over 2,500 animals.

Donations can be made to the new PAWS Endowment Fund by contacting CFNEIA at 319-287-9016 or Marcie Andrews at 641-330-5181. Donations made to the fund are eligible for a regular charitable tax deduction. Iowa taxpayers who donate to the fund can also benefit from the Endow Iowa 25 percent state tax credit.
