Winter strikes back

Police chief: Be careful on the roads; take precautions to prevent holiday crime

Charles City residents may have hope for a white Christmas after all, after at least 1.6 inches coated the town with a cloud of snowfall by 6 p.m. Wednesday. But while snow may find it’s way to Charles City again today, the accompanying fog and rain will play a part in the mix, giving travelers a few atypical December weather patterns to look out for.

Drivers should still be aware of hazards other vehicles present while on the road, Police Chief Hugh Anderson said. Visibility and wet roads will be a main concern, according to the NWS, and the patchy fog could reduce visibility to below half a mile in high terrain areas.

“Just be more aware than usual, it’s one of the most dangerous times to travel,” Anderson said. “A lot of people are disappointed we don’t have the white Christmas, but it makes an easier holiday season, and hopefully safer.”

Even with little snow expected, advice for safe travels is the same as it’s always been. Drivers are encouraged to pack a winter safety kit in the car with blankets, candles, a first aid kit and jumper cables, and to visit their local mechanic for a brief tune-up to catch any car problems before they hit the road.

Families should also protect themselves against crimes of opportunity, Anderson said. Locking up houses before leaving for vacations or midnight Mass can keep a cheery season from becoming a profitable crime haul.

“The biggest thing is just to make sure you do lock your doors,” Anderson said. “Criminals don’t take holidays.”
