IGCA honors Charles City bowlers and head coach

After its third season in high school bowling, Charles City was honored with three all-state selections as determined by the Iowa Girls’ Athletic Coaches Association.

In Class 1A girls, Comet junior Macy Ross was selected to the first team, and Charles City senior Mija Cotton was named to the second team.

In Class 1A boys, Comet junior Kaleb Ross was named to the second team.

For Macy Ross, it was her second IGCA All-State selection as she was named to the second team last season. This season, she helped the Comet girls win their first State Bowling Tournament trophy with a third-place finish. Ross herself placed third among the individual girls with a two-game 438 series — just three pins shy of claiming her second-straight individual title.

Last year Ross was the Class 1A individual girls champion with a 460 series, a mark that remains a school record for girls.

As the Comet girls’ leadoff bowler, Cotton was one of the team’s more consistent bowlers — both of her two-game series in the District 2 State Qualifier and State Tournament were the same (369). During the regular season, Cotton had a 183.9 average and was a reliable first-frame striker for the Comets in the Baker rotation rounds.

Kaleb Ross led all Comet bowlers with a 215 average during the regular season, and placed sixth among the boys individual rollers at the State Tournament while helping Charles City place fifth as a team.

This past season, Ross became the first Charles City bowler to reach 500 in two games — and he did it twice (504 and 500). Ross also recorded the third-highest two-game series for the Comets this season with a 492.

All three aforementioned Comet all-staters were IGCA Central District first-team selections.

Charles City junior Hunter Brockney, a big-ball cranking right-handed leadoff man, was also named to the Central District boys first team. With a regular-season average around 200, Brockney placed second among individual boys at the District 2 State Qualifier with a two-game series of 447.

Charles City senior Drew Mitchell, who was the District 2 State Qualifier champion with a 472 series before placing fourth among individual boys at the state meet, was named to the Central District second team.

“I thought maybe Drew should have made the first team,” Charles City bowling coach Doug Bohlen said. “His regular-season average (196.8) may not have been high enough to make the cut, but he sure bowled his best during the tournaments.

“If I had a choice, I’d rather have someone bowl better during the end of the season.”

Charles City junior Katie Sickman, who also bowled her best at the end of the season while placing seventh among the individual girls at state with a 395 series; and CC freshman Noah Reams, who rolled his way onto the boys varsity lineup while compiling an average of around 185, were both named Central District honorable mention.

Bohlen — not a bad bowler himself, right- or left-handed — was named District Coach of the Year.
