Early morning fire damages CC apartment building

The Charles City Fire Department responded to a report of an apartment building fire at 906 Gilbert St. at about 12:09 a.m. Monday morning. The fire was reported by multiple reports via 911 of a fire on the first floor.

On arrival with two engines and the department’s aerial truck, firefighters reported fire showing from the first floor of the apartment complex.  Firefighters made an exterior and interior attack, and the fire was deemed under control within 15 minutes of the Fire Department’s arrival.  Sixteen Charles City Firefighters responded and fought the fire in cold and snowy conditions.

Residents of the apartment complex were home and escaped the blaze, but one tenant was transported to Floyd County Medical Center by ambulance for possible smoke inhalation.  No other injuries were reported.

The complex is owned by William Fenholt, according to Floyd County Assessor online records.

CCFD investigators have classified the cause of the fire to be undetermined, and the fire continues to be under investigation.  There is major fire and smoke damage to the apartment involved in the fire as well as moderate water damage.  There was also minor to moderate smoke damage to the upstairs apartment.  The CCFD was back at the station and in service by 2:15 a.m.

The CCFD was assisted at the scene of the fire by the Charles City Police Department, Floyd County Sheriff’s Office, AMR Ambulance, Floyd County Search and Rescue, Floyd County EMA, and MidAmerican Energy.
