A winter storm hit Charles City and much of Iowa Sunday and continued into Monday.

The storm brought in about eight inches of snow to Charles City, and averaged eight inches around Iowa.

A low pressure system stemming from the Ohio River Valley brought on the cold temperatures and snow, Dan Jones Meteorologist with the National Weather Service out La Crosse said.

“No precipitation type issues, no winter mixes or anything. It was just simply all snow,” Jones said.

The snow started around 3 p.m. Sunday, and continued through the evening until the next day.

The Floyd County Sheriff responded to five snowbound vehicles during the winter storm, at various points throughout Floyd County.

The weather is expected to remain below freezing until Thursday. The high for tomorrow is expected to be 24 degrees with a low of one degree.

“There doesn’t look to be any major (storm) system coming through,” Jones said.

There is a cold front coming in Friday, that could bring some rain or snow, Jones said.

Precipitation is expected Thursday night and Friday, with the possibility of rain or snow, according the National Weather Service.

With the temperatures warming up, you could probably expect more rain than snow, Jones said.

“After that it looks we’ll be drying out, at least through next weekend,” Jones said. “That’s what we’re looking at weatherize.”

The temperature is expected to hit the 40s by the end of the week, Jones said.

According to the National Weather Service, there is no observable flooding from the storm in Floyd County.

The Cedar River is approaching flooding conditions near Waterloo, according the National Weather Service.

The temperature is expected to top out at 49 degrees on Sunday, and hit 44 degrees on St. Patrick’s Day with a law of 29 degrees that night, according to the National Weather Service.
