A truck accidentally veered off the road and moved some headstones at Riverside Cemetery last Saturday afternoon after the snowstorm.

Despite some reports, the cemetery was not vandalized and the Charles City Police Department is not investigating possible vandalism at the cemetery, said Riverside Cemetery Manager Jeff Titus.

“The problem’s been resolved,” he said. “There’s virtually no damage to any of the stones other than needing to be reset.

“I had the guy that bumped into the stones come out there, we called the police, we did an incident report just so have something on paper,” Titus said. “There’s no problem. Somebody got this all blown out of proportion.”

After going off the road the driver immediately came to Titus to resolve the matter, Titus said.

“They’re not very big stones, they’re just real small stones,” Titus said. “They were probably knocked 6 or 8 inches off the foundation.”

There was no damage to the stones, Titus said. “We just have to reset them.”
