Press Staff Report

A fire broke out at Nelson Tire and Auto in Charles City Friday evening. There were no injuries, but the inside of the building was severely damaged.

The fire caused Gilbert Street to be closed off from Glenwood Road to South Iowa Street, and a large crowd gathered to watch the Charles City Fire Department battle the blaze.

The department suspects the cause of the fire was electrical, and there was an estimated $125,000 worth of damage.

“We estimate $75,000 worth of damage to the building and $50,000 to the contents of the building,” said Charles City Fire Chief Eric Whipple.

MidAmerican Energy had a vehicle at the scene to disconnect power lines to prevent further damage and to make sure firefighters were safe from electrical hazards, Whipple said.

The Charles City Fire Department was assisted by the Floyd Fire Department, Charles City Police Department, Floyd County AMR, Search and Rescue and the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office.
