Acclaimed choir fills Charles City afternoon with song

The premier choir of one of the premier music programs in the country performed Sunday afternoon in Charles City.

The 80-member Nordic Choir, from Luther College in Decorah, sang a mixture of hymns, spirituals and other genres of music in English, Latin and other languages.

The performance was part of the group’s 2019 Great Lakes Tour, that includes stops in Minnesota, Illinois, Michigan, Ohio and Indiana as well as Iowa.

The choir tours annually, performing in churches of all denominations, schools and concert halls, including Lincoln Center in New York, the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles.

Internationally, the ensemble has toured in Germany, Italy, England, Ireland, Scandinavia, the Caribbean, Mexico, Russia and Eastern Europe.

In 2021, Nordic Choir will make its first tour to South Africa.

The group is under the direction of Andrew Last, a Luther College alumnus and associate professor of music and director of choral activities at the college.

Luther College is home to one of the largest collegiate music programs in the world with five choirs, three bands, three orchestras, two jazz bands and numerous chamber ensembles, totaling more than 800 student musicians, according to information from the college.
