K9 officer Jordy involved in incident in Floyd

Press Staff Report

Jordy, the Charles City Police Department’s drug-tracking K9 officer, was involved in an incident last month in Floyd, the department reported Monday.

A fax sent by the Police Department to the Press states:

“On the afternoon of June 25, 2019, there was an incident involving Jordy, the Charles City Police Department K9, and a third party at Jordy’s house in Floyd, Iowa. The third party was treated for minor injuries and released the same day. City officials have been in contact with the City of Floyd, and the Charles City Police Department is still gathering information about the incident. The Charles City Police Department is committed to the safety of the public and there is no risk to the public at this time.”

The fax says that the city of Charles City and the Charles City Police Department “have no further comments at this time.”

There have been reports on social media that Jordy may have bitten a person, although those reports have not been confirmed.

Jordy joined the Police Department after being purchased from Midwest K-9 in Des Moines. He was assigned to partner with Officer Dario Gamino, and the two trained together until Jordy came to live and work with Gamino in late September last year.

The effort to bring Jordy to Charles City started with a fundraising campaign that quickly grew to involve more than 100 community groups, businesses and individuals, donating thousands of dollars to help support Jordy’s purchase, training, equipment needs and ongoing care.

Jordy quickly began having an impact, with the Police Department crediting him with helping in the seizure of several instances of illegal drugs within his first month on the job.

Jordy replaced Midnight, a K9 officer who retired in 2017 because of medical issues. Midnight, a black Lab mix, was a single-narcotics dog that joined the force in 2009.
