They couldn’t serve their parents this year, but students at Washington Elementary school in Charles City still got to enjoy a Thanksgiving meal on Monday.

“It’s been a tradition for many years, but we did have to tweak it a little bit this year with COVID,” said first-grade teacher Jeremy Wilson.

The meal consisted of traditional Thanksgiving turkey, along with mashed potatoes, corn, a dinner roll and pumpkin pie in a bag. The dinner could not be enjoyed in the lunch room, as it has in previous years.

“We served it in the classrooms this year, and the kids ate together,” said first-grade teacher Jennifer Mohs. “The kids enjoyed it.”

The traditional dinner is more than just a yummy meal and a fun thing to do, it’s teaching kids how to have a traditional family dinner.
