Hampton City Council backs county efforts to land pork plant

HAMPTON, Iowa (AP) — The Hampton City Council is supporting the possibility of locating a pork plant in Franklin County.

The council voted unanimously Thursday to send a letter to county supervisors, telling them of the council’s support for beginning negotiations with representatives of Prestage Farms.

County and Prestage officials met after Mason City in neighboring Cerro Gordo County turned down Prestage’s plan for the $240 million plant on May 3.

Clinton, North Carolina-based Prestage has said the plant would employ around 1,800 people. Plant opponents have raised environmental issues and expressed concern about possible harm to property values.
