Each year, area kids swarm Charles City’s Central Park for Kids’ Day. The Friday before Independence Day is dedicated to the younger population.

The day begins with a performance from the junior Pom pom squad. At 10:30 a.m. the parade begins.

According to McDonald’s representative Sheryl Jeffrey, more than 20 years ago during the first Kids’ Day, 50 children participated in the parade. Now roughly 700 children don their red, white and blue, decorate their bikes, trikes and strollers stroll around the blocks.

At the conclusion of the parade, lunch is served in Central Park. During lunch is a variety of games and shows geared for the younger generations’ entertainment. There is a cheerleading performance by the Charles City Stars, a magic show and inflatables — to name a few.

Kids’ Day isn’t confined to Central Park. Instead, children can enjoy special treatment all across town. From the “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle” matinee at the Charles Theatre, to mini-golf specials at Bayou Bend, free swimming at the public pool and bowling specials at Comet Bowl.

Families are encouraged to register their children at 10 a.m. at Central Park for prizes and gift bags.
