The Weekly Word: Surrender ALL to Jesus

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.

 — Proverbs 3:5-6 ESV

Raise your hand if you have heard these verses before? It is a pretty well-quoted and known verse. Decorations are adorned with it, people quote it, and many Bibles have it underlined. It is an important and powerful two verses.

Allow me to draw your attention to one small word that is repeated twice. That word is “all.”

The Weekly Word: Surrender ALL to Jesus
Pastor Coulter Page, Bethany Alliance Church

The word all is so common to utilize. It is such a part of our vocabulary that maybe we do not stop to really think about what it means.

The dictionary defines it like this: “the whole quantity or amount; the whole number; every one” (dictionary.com). To say the word all, we are saying every bit of something or someone. Now go back to the verses where a father instructs his son and uses the word all twice.

He first says to “Trust in the Lord with all your heart.” (Prov. 3:5) He is instructing his son to put total and complete commitment in Jesus. This is not a half-way commitment. This is not just in some areas. This is not just when it is convenient. This is every part of his son’s life.

Have you totally committed to Jesus or is Jesus just for when it is convenient? Is Jesus just for an hour a week? That is not what God’s Word calls us into. He calls us into a total life surrender. Every moment of every day should be committed to Jesus. Our work, home, eating, sleeping, family, friends, finances, and stuff. All our heart should be his.

Then the father tells his son “In all your ways acknowledge him.” (Prov. 3:6) Everything he does and everywhere he goes and everything he has should be attributed back to Jesus.

This is not a token, obligatory pointing up to Heaven when something goes well. This is a deep-seeded, heart-rooted understanding that Jesus gets the credit and recognition due his name. It is understanding that we do not breath without him, we do not eat without him, we do not walk without him, and we do not live without him. We should acknowledge him in all our ways.

So here is my question for you. Have you given Jesus the whole quantity of yourself? Jesus is not here just for a couple moments out of your week. He is not here just to get you out of jail. He is here for all of you. Will you surrender all? Will the words of a classic Church chorus be your prayer?

Prayer

Father. I surrender all. I surrender all. All to Thee my blessed Savior. I surrender all. Amen.
