Homer Blickenderfer

Homer Blickenderfer, 91, of Charles City, passed away Saturday, Jan. 30, 2016 at his home in Charles City surrounded by his loving family. A funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 4 at Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Pastor Debra Lincoln of the Jordan River Church and United Church of Christ of Colwell will officiate. Burial will be held at Sunnyside Memory Gardens in rural Charles City following the service. The family invites everyone to the Sleep Inn following the burial for a time of fellowship and desserts.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 3 at Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City and will continue and hour prior to the service at Thursday at the funeral home.

Homer Louis Blickenderfer, the son of Arley and Agnes (Christie) Blickenderfer, was born on June 17, 1924 in Garner, Iowa. He received his education from LeRoy High School in LeRoy, Minnesota. Homer was united in marriage to Betty Markle on Nov. 25, 1945 in Austin, Minnesota. He and Betty moved to Charles City in 1948. Homer worked at the Oliver Farm, transported gasoline for G.F. Ardery in Charles City for five years, and farmed northeast of Charles City. He eventually owned and operated a trucking business for many years. Homer was a member of the Moose Lodge for over 50 years, VFW in Charles City, and Eagles in northern Arkansas for over 20 years.

Homer was a hardworking, social person who had many friends. He had a sharp mind and loved to tell stories of his past. Homer enjoyed boating on the Mississippi with his family and friends, camping, and traveling with his wife in their mobile home anywhere they could. He loved flying his planes that he owned when he had the opportunity.

Living family members include his three children: Larry (Jane) Blickenderfer of Shell Rock, Lorraine (Jerry) Lewis of Waterloo, and Louis (Ann) Blickenderfer of Charles City; eight grandchildren; two step grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; three step great grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; three step great-great grandchildren; sister, Betty Mikulich of Las Vegas, Nevada; brother in law, Rolland (Marguerite) Markle of Newton; and a special friend, Mavis Vanderbilt.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty; parents; brother, Roger Blickenderfer; and two sisters: Ruth Olinger, and Arlene Titus.
