Paul Dietrich

Paul Dietrich, 83, of Charles City, passed away Thursday, March 10, 2016, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City with his family by his side.

A funeral Mass for Paul Dietrich will be held 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, March 15, 2016, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City with the Rev. Gary Mayer celebrating the Mass. Burial will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Alta Vista at 2 p.m.

Visitation will be at Hauser Funeral Home from 5-7 p.m. Monday, March 14, with a Scripture Service beginning at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the funeral Mass Tuesday at church.

Paul Joseph Dietrich, the son of Albert and Mary Ann (Scanlon) Dietrich, was born Aug. 21, 1932, on the family farm near Alta Vista. He attended school at St. William’s School through 8th grade and then helped on the family farm. Paul entered the United States Army and proudly served his country during the Korean Conflict from 1953 to 1955. He was united in marriage to Theresa B. Blong on April 4, 1956, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Waucoma. To this union eight children were born. After marriage they spent the first four years southwest of Charles City on a farm where Paul worked as a hired hand. In 1960 he farmed in partnership with his brother until 1963, when he started farming on his own south of Alta Vista. Paul retired in 2002 and the couple moved to Charles City.

Paul was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City, Knights of Columbus, and played on the Alta Vista Baseball Team for several years into the early 1960’s. Paul enjoyed farming and playing cards, but he especially loved spending time with his children and grandchildren looking forward to their many visits Living family members include his eight children: Betty Dietrich of New Hampton, Gerald Dietrich of Austin, Minn., Joan (Larry) Lee of Calmar, Diana (Steve) Urban of Indianapolis, Ind., Michael Dietrich of Charles City, David (Mary) Dietrich of Pleasant Hill, Mark (Heather) Dietrich of Mason City and Maria (Dave) Rankin of Pleasant Hill; 13 grandchildren; brother, Francis Dietrich of Elma; sister, Mary Tilkes of Elma; sister-in-law, Mary Ann Dietrich of Waterloo; along with several nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 58 years, Theresa, on July 21, 2014; brother, Leo Dietrich; sister, Marcella Grober; two brothers-in-law: Andrew Grober and Leo Tilkes; and two sisters-in-law: Catherine Dietrich and Phyllis Dietrich.
