Mary Kathryn McElroy

Mary Kathryn McElroy, 92, of Shell Rock, formerly Charles City, passed away Sunday, April 3, 2016 at the Shell Rock Healthcare Center in Shell Rock.

According to her wishes cremation has taken place and a private family burial will be held at a later date.

Mary Kathryn McElroy was born on Jan. 8, 1924, in Henry County, Mo., to Mino T. and Mabel Kreider Holl. She attended rural school there until 1935. Her family then moved to Rockford with her mother and her sister, her father having died in 1934. She attended the elementary and high school at Rockford, graduating in 1942.

Following her graduation from high school, she was employed as a rural teacher, telephone operator, and also as a bank employee. She married Robert McElroy in Rockford on March 2, 1953. She and Robert farmed in the Rockford area until 1979, when they moved to Charles City.

She is survived by her two daughters, Connie (George) Hooper of Greenacres, Fla. and Christine Mackiewicz of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and two sons, Keith T. (Donna) McElroy of Flower Mound, Texas and Roger (Nancy) McElroy of Shell Rock. Also surviving are eight grandchildren: David (Tyhesha) Hooper, Megan (James) McKenna, Sara (Travis) Nelson, James Mackiewicz, Matthew Mackiewicz, Elizabeth (Chris) Zupancic, Keith J. McElroy and Jeffrey McElroy. In addition, there are three great-grandchildren, Jessica and Zoe McKenna, and Embree Nelson.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, daughter Carol McElroy, and sister Dorothy Biddick.

The family suggests memorial contributions be directed to Opportunity Village, 1200 North 9th St. West, Clear Lake, IA 50428.
