Jerry Hartwell

Jerry Hartwell, 68, of Charles City, passed away Monday, May 23, 2016 at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City with his loving family by his side.

A funeral service for Jerry Hartwell will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 27, 2016 at Trinity United Methodist Church in Charles City with the Rev. Jim Beranek officiating.

Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery in Charles City.

Visitation will be held at Hauser Funeral Home from 5-8 p.m. Thursday, May 26 and will continue one hour prior to the service on Friday at the church.

Jerry Lee Hartwell, the son of Leland and Ruth (Treloar) Hartwell, was born Feb. 3, 1948 in Mason City.

He received his education in Charles City, graduating from Charles City High School in 1966. Jerry continued his education at Wartburg College in Waverly, obtaining his Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education with a minor in History. He went on to earn his Master’s Degree in Administration from the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls.

Jerry was united in marriage to Suzanne Rouse on Aug. 23, 1969. To this union, two children were born, Kip and Bree.

Jerry was a P.E. teacher, coach and friend to all of his students for 34 years in Charles City. He retired in 2004 to stay home with his first granddaughter. Even in retirement, Jerry continued to work as a substitute teacher in Charles City and surrounding communities, especially Clarksville. His family meant the world to him and he never missed an opportunity to attend all of their activities. Jerry was sure to stop at any, and all, places with historical significance when travelling with his family. He was a die-hard sports fan of the Comets, Vikings and Twins, no matter if they won or lost. Jerry also loved 60s Rock ‘n’ Roll music, weight lifting, wearing Hawaiian shirts and would not pass up any chance he was given to enjoy ice cream. He was a friend to everyone.

Living family members include his wife of 46 years, Sue; two children: Kip (Jessica) Hartwell and Bree (Brian) Lahr all of Charles City; three grandchildren: Alaina Hartwell and Brinn and Braxton Lahr; two sisters: Joan Strickler of Greene and Janet (Chuck) Bonzer of Charles City; along with many nieces, nephews, other family members and numerous friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Leland in 1997 and Ruth in 2005; and a brother-in-law, Robert Strickler.
