Harold ‘Hod’ Berk

Harold “Hod” Berk, of Scottsdale, Arizona, formerly of Charles City, passed away Oct. 15, 2016, at HonorHealth Shea Medical Center in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Nov. 1, at 11 a.m. at the Green Acres Mortuary and Cemetery in Scottsdale. Visitation will be held at 10 a.m. Burial will be in the Green Acres Cemetery.

Harold H. Berk was born April 30, 1925, in Rockford, Iowa, to Mitchell and Edna (Beck) Berk. He married Flora Drury on Feb. 28, 1946, at the Little Brown Church in the Vale in Nashua. She preceded him in death.

He was a 1942 graduate of Rockford Public School and completed a federal training program in Manufacturing Technologies. Harold worked as a manager for several companies, including Oliver Corporation/White Farm Equipment, Borg-Warner, and Gilbert Engineering. He was also an industrial consultant. He was a long-time member of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers and the American Legion.

Harold served in the Army Air Corps and was stationed in England with the 8th Air Force. He was a crewmember on a B-17 Flying Fortress bomber, completing 26 bombing missions over Germany, northern France, and Normandy. He was awarded the Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with three bronze stars, and the American Campaign Medal.

Harold was an ardent golfer and scored two holes-in-one.

He and Flora enjoyed traveling throughout the United States, Europe, and Northern Africa. He also was a fitness advocate and looked forward to the times he spent with his buddies at the fitness center.

He is survived by one brother, Jerry (Connie) Berk of Mt.

Vernon, Mo.; one sister-in-law, Reva Jarosh of Davenport; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Flora; his parents; two brothers, Robert and Louis; a sister, Betty Boomhower; two sisters-in law, Verona Conzett and Marcella Carlson; and one brother-in-law, Virgil Drury.

Memorials may be made to the Scottsdale Community College Fitness Center or the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
