Lyle Edward Bunston, Sr.

Lyle Edward Bunston, Sr. of Humboldt passed away peacefully Monday, Nov. 7, 2016, at Humboldt County Hospital in the Hospice room surrounded by his family and friends.

Lyle was born in Riceville on Sept. 1, 1927, to Stephan Bunston and Martha (Lubbert) Bunston. He attended rural schools in Riceville. In 1945, Lyle enlisted in the Army and proudly served his country. He was honorably discharged in 1947. He lived most of his life in the Charles City area, where he farmed and ran his logging company, Bunston Logging Company. He moved in 1995 to Humboldt.

Lyle was a passionate man who enjoyed his family and friends, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Lyle’s love for his horses brought him to Humboldt, where he trained and raced his Standardbreds. He especially loved his trotters and he loved to share his knowledge and help younger drivers succeed at the track. He would talk endless hours about his horses and loved to tell a good story or two. He made many good friends and had lots of fond memories at the track.

On Oct. 1, 1949, Lyle married the love of his life, his wife of 67 years, Patricia Ann Freiberg. He is survived by his wife Patricia Bunston; brother Dale Bunston; sister Vera May Davidson; five children, Lyle (Mila) Bunston, Jr. of Humboldt, Karen Beine of Floyd, Sheryl (Dan) Johnson of Cedar Rapids, Julie (Zody) Brown, Lisa (Chris) Gebel of Charles City; nine grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren.

Lyle was preceded in death by his father and mother, Stephan and Martha; brother Lawrence Bunston; grandchild Justin Gebel; and son-in-law Bob Beine.

A balloon release is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 12 at 2 p.m. at the Humboldt County Fairgrounds racetrack in Humboldt.
