Gregory John Budweg

Gregory John Budweg, 61, of St. Paul, Minn., formerly of New Hampton died Saturday, Nov. 5, 2016, at the Minneapolis Veteran Medical Center after brief battle with cancer.

Online condolences for Greg’s family may be left at hugebackfuneralhome. com Gregory John Budweg was born July 28, 1955, in New Hampton, the oldest child of John F. and RoseAnn (Peters) Budweg. He attended St. Joseph Community School through eighth grade and was a 1973 graduate of the New Hampton High School. Greg subsequently attended Iowa State University and was in the ROTC, graduating in 1977. He was commissioned as an officer in the United States Navy. Greg had been a helicopter pilot and served during Operation Desert Storm. He retired from the military on Aug. 31, 1994 as a Lieutenant Commander.

On Oct. 31, 1984, he was married to Roxanne Hill while in Florida. To this union, three children were born. The family had lived in Sicily and Germany while Greg served our country. The couple later divorced. For the last 15 years, Greg worked for the United States Department of Veteran Affairs giving service to veterans. In his free time he loved spending time on the farm, fishing, hunting and being a father and grandfather. He will be remembered by his siblings as their iconic big brother and his children as the most loving and very dedicated father ever.

Survivors include two daughters, Bridget Scheidt and Laura (Clyde) Budweg-McRae all of Burnsville, Minn.; one son, Nicholas Budweg of Lakeville, Minn.; five grandchildren, Coen Utley, Gavin McRae, Thalia Utley, Luna Budweg and Cabot Marie McRae; three brothers, Clark Budweg of New Hampton, Ward (Jacky) Budweg of Decorah and Aaron Budweg of Eldora; five sisters, Greta (Susan) Budweg of Ashburn, Va., Laura (Mark Nystrom) Budweg of Apple Valley, Minn., Adrianne (Richard) Iverson of Ames, Caryn (Jeff) Dahm of Bettendorf, and Claudia Lemper of Ames; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, John Budweg in infancy.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, 2016, at Holy Family Parish, New Hampton with Rev. Brian Dellaert celebrating the Mass. Interment with military honors will be held at Calvary Cemetery, New Hampton. Friends may greet the family 4-7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11, at the Hugeback-Johnson Funeral Home in New Hampton.
