Melvin Weiss, 89 ,of Charles City, died Monday, Jan. 30, 2017 at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City. He had been a resident of the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home since Dec. 17, 2015.

Melvin Arthur Weiss was born in Pleasant Grove Township, 290th Street, Powersville, Floyd County, Iowa to Arthur and Ella Ruth (Rodman) Weiss on Oct. 3, 1927. He played football while attending Greene High School.  He enjoyed working on the farm and enjoyed being around his grandfather, Herman Weiss, who died when Melvin was 15 years old.

Melvin served in the U.S. Army as a medic.  He was stationed on an Army base on Staten Island, N.Y. He married Jennie Fuls of Allison on April 9, 1947 in New York. After his tour of duty ended, Melvin and Jennie moved to Greene with Melvin working as a day laborer helping pour sidewalks and doing other concrete jobs. When he first worked for Allied Construction during summers, he traveled to Arcadia, Calif. to find employment during the winter months.

He enjoyed his work attending conventions and lettings as part of his job at Allied Redi-Mix. During his employment and after retiring, Jennie and Melvin wintered in Florida where he enjoyed fishing and boating with LeRoy and Wilma Grant. The Grants and Melvin and Jennie were neighbors in St. James City, Fla. for 28 years. Melvin also enjoyed fishing and boating in Iowa, Minnesota and Canada.

Living family members include a nephew, Mark Weiss (Karen) of Granger; two nieces: Julie Weiss of Winterset and Melissa Seivert (Mark) of Granger. Also, sister-in-law, LaVon Hifler of Gainesville, Texas; sister-in-law, Mary (Gary) Grant of Sedalia, Mo.; and brother-in-law, Larry (Barb) Fuls of Charles City. Jennie’s nieces and nephews are Tammy (John) McBride of Mineral Springs, Ark.; Kimberly (Mike) Hemann of Fort Worth, Texas; David (Sheila) Grant of Columbia, Mo.; Jenifer (Kurt) Leistikow of Cedar Falls; Mary Anne Hifler of Dallas, Texas; and Amy (Jon) Paulus of Cedar Rapids.

Melvin was preceded in death by his wife, Jennie on July 14, 2015; brother, Clair Weiss in 2011; father, Archie Weiss in 1996; mother, Ruth in 1992; grandparents; brother-in-law Bill Hifler; and brother and sister-in-law, Elton “Al” (Berniece) Fuls.
