ROCKFORD — 14_J_Hall ObitLarry L. Hall, 78, of Rockford, died Friday, March 10, 2017 at his home in Rockford.

A gathering of friends and family will be held from 4-8 p.m. on Wednesday, March 15, 2017 at Fullerton Funeral Home, 302 West Main in Rockford. Private graveside inurnment services will be held at a later date at Riverside Cemetery in Rockford. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to the American Heart Association.

Larry was born on a farm near Rudd, the son of Leo and Susan (Brocka) Hall. He graduated from Rockford High School in 1956 and then joined the United States Army Reserve. He was honorably discharged in 1962. Larry was united in marriage to Maxine Selleck on June 10, 1962 at the Methodist Church in Storm Lake. He was a laborer and truck driver for many years at the Rockford Brick and Tile Company until its closing. He and Maxine then purchased and operated the Hall’s Variety store on Main Street in Rockford and served hundreds of customers who believed in shopping local. They enjoyed riding their bicycles around town and going to Oregon in the summer to visit with Maxine’s family. After Maxine’s passing, Larry began driving truck for Ruan as a way of keeping busy.

He spent his childhood fishing Rockford’s area rivers and lakes. Larry was a hard worker, always helping neighbors with projects doing odds and ends. He enjoyed being back on a farm, helping Kevin Smith and others with whatever they needed to have done. Larry was an avid fan of his grandchildren’s sports and school activities. In his later years he spent time watching old western movies, having coffee with his friends, doing puzzles and bird watching.

He is survived by his only child, Cheryl, and her husband Monte Cochran of Urbandale; four grandchildren: Katie Lindgren of Des Moines, Kristen Lindgren of West Des Moines, and Jake Cochran and Michael Cochran of Urbandale; three sisters: Mariel (Ken) Kilby of Charles City, Maureen Pagel of Iowa City, and Marcia (Jim) Jacobsen; and one brother, Leon (Shirley) Hall, all of Charles City.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents and wife Maxine on Dec. 18, 1992.
