Wilma Marie (Koebrick) Handt, the daughter of William and Lenora (Hoeft) Koebrick, was born November 19, 1927 at home in Chickasaw County near Bassett, Iowa. She attended small rural schools for her early education and attended Charles City High School for grades 9 through 12 where she graduated in 1945.

Wilma worked at Salisbury on a coop program during high school and became a full time employee after graduation. Wilma left this job and headed west with a friend and spent some time exploring and working in Santa Anna, CA. She eventually headed back to Charles City and was employed at Oliver Tractor Company. Wilma took time off work to raise her family, but eventually began working in the Charles City High School office where she was secretary to the principal until she retired in 1990.

Wilma married Robert Handt at Cross Lutheran Church in Charles City, Iowa on Dec. 18, 1949. Bob and Wilma built their home on 7th Ave. in Charles City where they raised their two children, Michael and Teri. After her children were grown and following Robert’s death in 2010, Wilma lived at this home for the remainder of her life, sharing it with her many beloved pets.

Wilma enjoyed planting beautiful pink impatient flower baskets during the summer months, reading, sewing, socializing with her women’s group, getting together with her retired friends from school and her Wednesday lunches at the Dairy Queen. She loved spending time with her family and especially her grandchildren whenever she could. Wilma will be missed by all who knew her.

Living family members include her children: Michael Handt of Charles City and Teri (Dave) Nelson of Minneapolis, MN; grandchildren: Kristi (Jake) Cherney of Madison, WI and Matthew (Kayla) Nelson of Minneapolis, MN; one great-granddaughter: Brooke Cherney; two sisters: Carol Chestek and Gladys Kellogg of Charles City; two brothers: Wesley Koebrick of Charles City and Russel (Sue) Koebrick of St. Paul, MN; along with several nieces, nephews; and her beloved cats, Jimmy and Johnny.
