Mary E. Abell

Dougherty, IA – Mary E. Abell, 95, of Dougherty, IA, went home to Our Lord on Monday (June 17, 2019) at the Rockwell Community Nursing Home in Rockwell, IA.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 am on Tuesday (June 25, 2019) at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 305 E. Elm Street, Rockwell, IA, with The Rev. John Gossman as Celebrant. Burial will follow in St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery, Dougherty, IA.
A visitation with public viewing will be held Monday (June 24, 2019) at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 305 E. Elm Street, Rockwell, IA from 5 pm until 7 pm.

Should friends desire, memorials may be left in Mary’s name in care of her family.
The daughter of George H. and Mary M. (Herman) Staudt, Mary Elizabeth Staudt was born on February 22, 1924 on the family farm near Dougherty, IA. She attended and graduated from St. Patrick’s Catholic School in Dougherty, IA. On February 10, 1949 Mary was united in marriage to William T. Abell at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. Together they would be blessed with two children, Patrice and David.

Mary was very active within the family farm, always lending a helping hand to William, and in later years, David; tending to their farm, helping with the fieldwork and making sure no one went hungry! She and William loved to attend dances at The Moose Lodge in Charles City. Mary was very involved with the local 4-H group while the children were growing up and loved to spend her free time baking and cooking for the family. Each holiday season Mary was known for delivering her delicious Christmas baked goods to area friends and the community nursing home.

Mary cherished the time spent with her children and grandchildren. She loved following their school and athletic activities and could always be counted on to be cheering on from the sidelines. She was also an Iowa Hawkeyes fan and enjoyed watching Iowa basketball.

For many years she was a member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary in Dougherty, the Catholic Ladies Auxiliary, and St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.
Those grateful in sharing in her life are her daughter, Patrice (Ross) Abell Aleff, Pine Island, Minn.; grandchildren, Dylan Abell, Justin (Kacie) Abell, and Alexandra (Jordan) Noteboom; great grandchildren, Austin, Brady, Jordan, Claire, and Kayden Abell, as well as an expected Noteboom great grandchild in October; brothers, Donald (Betty) Staudt, Mason City, and Donavon Staudt, Rockwell; sister in law, Jeannine (Abell) Frank, New Berlin, IL.; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family and many friends.
Mary is preceded in death by her parents; husband, William; son, David; brother, Morris Staudt; sister in law, Rosemary Staudt; in laws, Theodore and Mary Abell; sister in law, Ann Louise (Abell) Meirhaeghe; and brother in law, Robert Frank.
