Carolyn was born on April 9, 1934 to Clarence and Agnes (Christiansen) Smith in Brayton, Iowa. She grew up in rural southwest Iowa later moving with the family to Charles City, IA attending schools there until she graduated from Charles City High School in 1952. On Oct. 30, 1952, Carolyn was united in marriage to Don Roths at Immaculate Conception Church. Carolyn and Don moved away from Charles City when Don enlisted in the United States Air Force. They spent time in Rantoul, IL and Tucson, AZ. After Don was honorably discharged, Carolyn and Don raised their family in Belvedere, IL and McHenry, IL for total of about 10 years, then moved back to Charles City to continue raising their family. In 1972, Carolyn and Don bought a farm East of Charles City that they called “The Pet Rock Farm”. They moved back to town in 2001 after selling the farm in retirement.

Throughout her life she took pride in raising her family, sewing, quilting and baking. Carolyn and Don enjoyed camping creating great memories with friends and family. The last family camping trip ended in taking in shelter with family members for a tornado warning. What fun they had playing cards with the rural card club! In her younger years they would go bowling or roller skating. She was remembered for her excellent home cooking and large Sunday family meals.

Those left to cherish her memory include her children: Martha (Randy) Brunner, David (Lori Webster) Roths, Jennifer (Kurt) Burton and John (Alysia Hulbert) Roths; brother Kent Smith; daughter-in-law, Connie Roths; sister-in-law, Marlys (Dale) Mondt; grandchildren: Stacy, Ian, Ryan, Tamarra, Rich, Kyia, Kinley and Kyler, eight great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
