Lorna Sophia Olson

Lorna S. Olson, 81, of Charles City, IA passed away on July 26, 2020 at her home.

At her request she was cremated; there will not be visitation. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic a private graveside service and inurnment will be held at Riverside Cemetery in Charles City with Pastor Debi Lincoln officiating.

Lorna Sophia Holmes was born at home in Burtrum, MN on March 12, 1939, the youngest of 8 children. In 1957 she married Donald L. Olson. There were no children, but have several nieces, nephews, great-nieces/great nephews they considered their own. Don and Lorna moved from St. Cloud, MN in 1978 to purchase the Coast-to-Coast Hardware store in Charles City, IA, which they operated for 5 years until Don passed away. Lorna’s last employment, before her retirement in 2004, was the Floyd County Courthouse. She was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, St. John Lutheran Church, Charles City Bowling League and the Y.M.C.A.

Lorna loved to bowl; was inducted in Charles City Bowling Hall of Fame in 2012 (one of her happier moments), served as President of her league on Tuesday evenings, bowled on Thursday morning with the Early Risers League and on the Senior League Tuesday and Friday afternoons. She also enjoyed going to the cabin in Minnesota fishing in the summer with her special friend Randy. She and Randy would travel to many places including two to three months in South Padre Island, TX, each winter.

Lorna was preceded in death by her mother Edna (Rosten) Holmes, father Mandius Holmes, five sisters, two brothers, and husband Don in November, 1983.

Left to cherish her memory is her special friend Randy Bohlen, Randy’s family, Robert Perkinson, Lisa Schwickerath, special niece Julie, nephew Mike (wife Carrie, son Matt, daughter Katie), nephew Gregg (wife Gigi, daughters, Heather and Amanda, sister-in-laws Del Holmes, Leone (Lee) Holmes (son, Joseph) and several other nieces/great nieces, nephews/great nephews and all of her ‘bowling buddies’ especially Darlyce Zimmer, Judith Buchholz, Dotta Bissonette, and Pat Mehmen. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to the Charles City High School boys and girls bowling teams. Checks can be made to the Charles City High School Bowling Teams and mailed to:
