Lee A. Zimmer

Lee A. Zimmer died Oct. 20, 2020. He was born July 12, 1927, in Floyd County, Iowa where he spent most of his life.

He attended Floyd Community School where he graduated in 1945. He enlisted in the Navy after high school. Lee served in the Navy from July 1945, to August 1946. After he was honorably discharged from the Navy, he attended Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa, for one year. He married Darlyce R. Jensen on June 25, 1951. They worked and raised a family on a farm one mile northwest of Floyd, Iowa. Along with farming, Lee worked at the Oliver (White Farm) tractor factory until 1977, when he retired after 30 years of employment. The community boards Lee Zimmer served on include: the Floyd County School Board, the Joint County School Board, the Floyd County Extension Board, the Floyd County Conservation Board, the Floyd County Soil Conservation Board, and the Family Community Credit Union Board. He served in various positions on the Floyd Methodist Church board and often served as a lay delegate attending the annual Methodist Church State Convention. He also served as a Boy Scout and 4-H leader. Lee was a member of the Floyd Methodist Church, the Floyd County Farm Bureau, the North Iowa Prairie Network, the Iowa Tree Farm System, and the Iowa Woodland Owners Association. Awards he received include a Lifetime Achievement Award from Floyd County Conservation, Wildlife Conservation Award from the Izaak Walton League, and a Trees Forever Award for the acres of trees he planted on the their farm.

Lee was preceded in death by his parents, Vern and Amy Zimmer, and a brother, Fred Zimmer (wife Rita Zimmer) all of Floyd, IA. A sister, Marjorie Petermeier (husband was Elmo Petermeier) of Marshalltown, IA, also preceded Lee’s death.

Lee is survived by his wife Darlyce Zimmer of St. Ansgar; sister, Beverly Bonsall (husband Duane) of Rock Island, IL; daughter Susan Lekwa (husband Steve) of Nevada, IA; son Jeffrey Zimmer of Mason City, IA; daughter Julie Zimmer (husband Gary Heimann) of Hudson, WI; and son Kris Zimmer of Des Moines, IA. He is survived by seven grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

Memorials may be sent to Susan Lekwa, 1009 South J Ave., Nevada, IA 50201 or Julie Zimmer, 413 Coulee Trail, Hudson, WS 54016. Memorial funds will be used to purchase a tree to be planted at the Floyd County Conservation Center and gifted to the Floyd Grace Methodist Church. Possible celebration of life may be held in the spring of 2021.
