Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Charles City.

Dennis Ramon Schmitt, the son of Steve and Shirley (Snyder) Schmitt, was born on March 28, 1951 and was raised on the family farm near Charles City as one of their nine children.

He married the love of his life, Nancy (Reints) on Nov. 7, 1970 and they recently celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary. They raised their four children in the area and made many wonderful memories and a lifetime of friendships.

Dennis was a 1969 graduate of CCHA after attending I.C. School until its closing. He worked road construction and along with farming for several years he owned Schmitt Tiling, retired from Bauer Built in Mason City, and was current owner of Schmitt Sawmill.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Nancy; sons, Rich and Andy (Stacy) of Charles City; daughters, Jennie of West Des Moines and Hope Schmitt of Des Moines; grandsons, Harrison Schmitt of West Des Moines, Nathan (Allie) Germundson of Davenport, Evan Winters of Eden Prairie, MN, Jacob Mangine of Charles City; and great-granddaughter, Mabel. He is also survived by one brother, Craig (Jackie) Schmitt of Floyd; and seven sisters: Stevie (Tom) O’Neill, Cheri (Rick) Houser, Barb (Mike) Smith, Deb (Phil) McIntire, Jan (Steve) Craven, Kolleen (Dewey) Milligan and Terri (Jim) Asbury. Survivors also include his step-mother, Ellen Billings-Reints of Greene, and step-sister, Jacquie (Jim) of Poppe, MN.

There are 27 nieces and nephews, 45 great-nieces and nephews, and 6 great-great nieces, who loved their Uncle Denny and enjoyed his hayrides and bonfires at their home every year. Many aunts and uncles mourn his loss.

Dennis was a lifetime member of I.C. Church and Catholic Couples Group. He was a charter member of the Hope House Board. He was most proud of his 40 years of sobriety. Along with his strong faith and perseverance during difficulties, he shared with all of this family that: “It is ALL IN GOD’S HANDS”… and they all take great comfort in that.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Steve and Shirley Schmitt; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Vernon and Eleanor Reints; brother-in-law, Dennis Reints; step-sister, Mary Ellen Billings; step-brother, Greg Billings, and many grand-parents.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials may be given to I.C. Church, I.C. School or Hope House, Box 562, Charles City, IA 50616.
