LaVonne Johnson

LaVonne Johnson, 88, of Floyd, passed away Saturday, Sept. 4, 2021 at MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center in Mason City.

A funeral service for LaVonne Johnson will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 9, 2021 at Grace United Methodist Church in Floyd with Pastor Mechille Boldt officiating. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery in Floyd.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2021 at Hauser Weishaar Funeral Home in Charles City and will continue one hour before the service at the church on Thursday.

LaVonne Elaine (Hoel) Johnson, the daughter of Virgil and Helena “Helen” (Meyer) Hoel, was born Dec. 17, 1932 at the family home near Devonia, Iowa. She received her education in the Floyd School System and graduated from Floyd High School in 1951.

LaVonne was united in marriage to Clayton Johnson on Aug. 3, 1951 at Grace United Methodist Church in Floyd. The couple made their home in rural Floyd and they were blessed with six children: Jacqueline, Michael, Darcie, Dennis, Karla and Kevin. She worked as a bookkeeper at Spurgeon’s for several years and at Allied Redi-Mix for many years before her retirement.

LaVonne was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Floyd and was very active in several groups at the church including United Methodist Women and was involved with the area Birthday Club. She was also a 4-H Leader for several years helping her children with their projects.

LaVonne enjoyed sewing, quilting (remaining active in her quilting guild even recently), flower gardening, watching and feeding cardinals and playing cards (she and Clayton were members of the same card club for over 70 years). She especially treasured her time spent with her family and close friends.

Living family members include her husband of 70 years, Clayton of Floyd; children: Jacquie (Dave) Watson of Charles City, Mike (Connie) Johnson of Greene, Darcie Regan of Floyd, Karla (Mike) Byrd of Sterling, Illinois and Kevin (Beth) Johnson of Medway, Massachusetts; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; sister, Marvlyn Teepe of Charles City; two brothers: Edwin (Sherry) Hoel of Ohio and Roger (Linda) Hoel of Coralville; along with numerous nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.

LaVonne was preceded in death by her parents; son, Dennis in 2013; grandson, Nicholas Watson; twin great-granddaughters: Addison and Aubrey Lentz; sister-in-law, Sharon Hoel; and brother-in-law, Allen Teepe.
