Letter to the Editor: Charles City, we are forever grateful

From the Family of Ellen Bengtson

When Ellen was killed on August 2, our family’s world was forever changed. In the midst of our deep grief, the Charles City community rallied around us and we were deeply moved by your comforting support, prayers and actions.

We will remember:

  • The scores of bikers and bystanders who turned out for a silent bike ride vigil in her name less than 48 hours after her death.
  • The outpouring of support, meals and lodging for our family and friends assembling to say farewell to a beautiful person taken away from this earth at the age of just 28.
  • The ghost bike memorial raised in Ellen’s name, installed by volunteers from the C.C. Bike Around Tuesday bike club, reminding us to drive without distractions and to share the rode with bicycles – it is the law!
  • Bethany Alliance Church, where Ellen played on the worship team that morning and where she worshiped God and made friends of all ages – children and youth group and young adult fellowship
  • Charles City Rotary support to us and remembrances of Ellen, a C.C. Rotarian and volunteer
  • Her employer, Cambrex, for the support and comfort given to us, memories shared by co-workers and colleagues – we have truly been blessed by your compassion and empathy
  • The musicians and friends from the C.C. Chamber Orchestra. We are very thankful for all who performed at her memorial service.

Thank you, Charles City, for welcoming our daughter into your community. She brightened the world when she was in it, and will continue do so after leaving it because she will live in the hearts and memories of all who were fortunate enough to love and know her.
