Letter to the Editor: Consider Comets in Kmart building plans

By Randy Martinson, Alexandria, Virginia

When writing the grant application to repurpose the old Kmart building, be sure to include how the process will benefit Comet students.

Your recent article speaks to the resilient and creative spirit of America’s Hometown. As we await the council’s  decision, let’s be sure to get our public school students involved.

There are many ways that young people can contribute to and learn from the old Kmart building. Comets can study local government decisions, environmental and stormwater management. They can even roll up their sleeves to do some of the dirty work. The demo and construction work involved to prepare the old Kmart building offers real-world career and technical opportunities to middle and high school “shop” students.

Or on second thought, why not just write a grant to turn the building into an off-site career, technical and environmental education center for Charles City students?
