Charles City varsity softball head coach Brian Bohlen had told his Comets that early in the season pitchers will be well ahead of the hitters.

They didn’t listen very well.

“What can I say?” Bohlen said after the Comets dismantled the Turkey Valley Trojans 12-0, Wednesday at Sportsmen’s Park in a game that didn’t see the fifth inning.

The day before, Charles City defeated North Butler and its revered ace Taylor Graven 13-3 in another game that was stopped due to the slaughter rule.

“We’re doing a nice job with the bats, and I just hope it continues and we can stay hot,” Bohlen said.

Sophomore Tayler Schmidt was the winning pitcher of record after yielding two hits and no runs while striking out eight in four innings.

She had more than enough support from her teammates, who rapped out 16 hits — mind you, this total was achieved in just 3.2 innings as the game was called immediately after the 12th Comet cross the plate.

Comet centerfielder Shae Etherington filled the box score nicely by going 3-for-3 with three RBIs and four runs scored.

Megan Roethler, who was winning pitcher in the Comets opener against North Butler, also went 3-for-3. So did Sara Martin, who had a double among her hits and drove in two runs and scored twice herself.

Leadoff hitter Megan Staudt and first baseman Jamie Sindlinger each had two hits for the Comets, who will Crestwood tonight in a doubleheader starting at 6 p.m.

“That is if we can get it in,” Bohlen said of the forecast of rain.

If the weather holds, the Comets will have played four games in three days to start the season.

“But we’re off for the entire (Memorial Day) weekend,” Bohlen said.

For Turkey Valley, Emily Busta and Ashton Kout were the only Trojans to attain hits against Schmidt, who also doubled and scored three runs.

Busta was the losing pitcher of record yielding 11 hits in 3 innings. All nine runs scored against her were earned.
