Comet wrestlers take on Panthers before holiday break

MANLY — Coming into the Charles City at Central Spring wrestling dual meet on Thursday, you thought you walked into the mother of all Christmas parties.

Just about everyone in attendance, including the wrestlers, coaches and cheerleaders, were dressed in garish sweaters.

It was also a packed house in Central Springs’ small gymnasium due to a youth wrestling meet that preceded the junior varsity and varsity bouts.

The Panthers won the non-conference varsity meet 47-28.

Charles City’s two returning state podium placers, senior Dylan Koresh and junior Jack Sindlinger — both coming off undefeated all-fall performances at the Battle of Waterloo — continued to roll over the competition in Manly.

While using is favorite finishing move — the cradle package — Koresh stuck Max Howes 90 seconds into their 170-pound match.

Sindlinger pinned Cody Downing 38 seconds into their 182-pound match.

Sindlinger’s win drew the Comets within 3 points (31-28) of the Panthers after falling behind 22-0 through the first four matches. But Central Springs won the final hree matches with two falls and a major decision for a margin of victory.

Sophomore Alec Staudt finally got Charles City in the win column with a fall victory over Garrett Heagel with 10 seconds left in the first period of their 132-pound match.

Comet junior Carter Profitt later recorded a 10-1 major decision over Kaden Jacobsen in their 152-pound match.

Comet 160-pound junior Elliott Sinnwell, who also wrestled well at the Battle of Waterloo, stuck Dylan Marker a little more than three minutes into their bout.

Though he was among those dressed for the occasion, Charles City co-head coach Ryan Fank was not in a festive mood after the meet.

“I’m a little frustrated with the effort,” Fank said of the Comets’ final meet of the year — they won’t be back in action until after the holiday break.

“I can want it for them, but some of these guys need to want it for themselves,” Fank said.

Among the victorious Panthers was senior Zach Ryg who recorded the 150th win of his high school career.

Ryg was a state semifinalist last season, and is ranked No. 1 in the Class 1A 195-pound bracket by IAwrestle.com.
