NEW HAMPTON — Playing for the second straight game without the services of 6-foot-7 junior Bradley Andrews, the Charles City Comets managed to battle back from a 9-point deficit to finally take their first lead of the game in the fourth quarter on way to defeating New Hampton, 69-62, in Northeast Iowa Conference boys basketball action on Tuesday.

For the Comets, it was their fourth-straight victory improving their record to 6-3 overall and 4-2 in the NEIC. It also completed a regular-season sweep of the Chickasaws — Charles City defeated NH 58-56 on Dec. 18.

Through three quarters, the Chickasaws employed a semi-effective inside-outside attack while taking a 48-41 lead going in the final eight minutes of regulation.

Charles City cut the lead to 1 (48-47) on a 3-point basket by sophomore JJ Ritter. Soon after, Comet senior Jack Molstead seized a long rebound from a New Hampton missed shot and pushed the ball up the court before lobbing an assist to a since-released Ritter for a layup to give the Comets their first lead (49-48) with 6:06 remaining.

Charles City went on score 28 points in the fourth quarter while holding New Hampton to 14 for the margin of victory.

After a modest start, Molstead heated up in the second half mixing in 3-point shots and successful drives to the basket to lead all scorers with 27 points.

Ritter scored 15, and junior Tait Arndt — who has been taking up the slack in the post due to Andrews’ absence — scored 8 of his 9 points in the first half to keep the Comets close.

Dillon Roberson scored 16 points to lead New Hampton (5-7, 1-4).

* Earlier in the girls varsity game of the NEIC doubleheader, New Hampton managed to pull away in the second half to defeat Charles City 56-26.

Chickasaw post players Madeline Moorman and Hope McDonald scored 22 and 14 points, respectively, with a lot of help from nifty interior passing from their guard teammates.

New Hampton improved to 8-4 and 3-3.

Lynn Hoeft, Jodie Sindlinger and Lydia Staudt each scored 6 points for the Comets (0-11, 0-6).
