CHARLES CITY — It wasn’t standing room only in Comet Gym for the Northwest Iowa Conference girls basketball game featuring Waverly-Shell Rock and hosting Charles City.
Basketball fans from both schools were split in two places with the Go-Hawks hosting the Comets for the boys game going on simultaneously on Tuesday night.
Nonetheless, Go-Hawk fans have a tradition of remaining standing until their team activates its side of the scoreboard.
And there they stood almost stubbornly during the girls game as stubborn defense by the overwhelming underdog Comets helped keep the contest scoreless for nearly three-and-a-half minutes.
Yet the W-SR fans were not going to stand forever as the Class 4A No. 5-ranked Go-Hawks were just as likely not going to be shutout. And when Go-Hawk junior Camryn Grawe finally broke the scoreless tie with a 3-pointer, it was off to the races as Waverly-Shell Rock went on to win 59-25 while sweeping the regular-season series from the Comets.
Sophomore Abbie Draper led all scorers with 13 points, and senior Olivia Phillips scored 10 for the Go-Hawks, who improved to 17-2 overall while clinching the NEIC title with an 11-1 conference record.
A day after posting a double-double in Monday’s loss to Waukon, Comet freshman Ashlyn Hoeft led her team with 12 points and three steals.
Senior Jodie Sindlinger added 8 points for the Comets, who fell to 0-18 and 0-11.
* Meanwhile in Waverly the Comet boys were nearly perfect at the free-throw line during the fourth quarter and when the Go-Hawks were in a must-foul situation to win 71-55 to sweep their season series.
Jack Molstead made eight straight free throws during the homestretch while leading all scorers with 35 points, and Cael Ruzicka score a career-high 10 points for the Comets, who improved to 12-6 overall and 7-4 in the NEIC.
Waverly-Shell Rock, led by Mosai Newsom’s 21 points, fell to 9-10 and 8-4.
