Charles City YMCA Swim Team qualifies 12 to state meet

CHARLES CITY — “So you’re going to break that record this weekend,” Charles City YMCA Swim Team head coach Julie Marty said to Nick Litterer about the 50 backstroke event that has been reinstated in the Boys 15-21 division at the YMCA State Meet to be held March 2-3 at the Marshalltown YMCA.
“Only if I win it,” Litterer replied.
Winning, you know, is kind of a requirement when it comes to setting records.
“My qualifying time (24.9) would be good enough to break the record at state,” Litterer said, “but there are a couple other guys who have qualified at that time or better, so it’s likely going come down to who wins that race for the one who is going to be the record-setter.”
At last year’s YMCA State Meet, Litterer won two gold medals in the 100 back and 200 freestyle, and placed second in the 200 back.
At the recent Iowa High School State Meet where he was a multi-event qualifier for Mason City, Litterer as an individual and relay team member had a hand in all of the 40 points scored by the Mohawks.
Litterer’s finals time in the 200 freestyle at the high school state meet would be another age-group record if duplicated at the YMCA State Meet — that is, of course, if he places first again.
Including Litterer, the CC YMCA team has qualified 12 to state — Stephen Bachman, Bennett Hansen, Isaak Jensen, Ryan Kvernevig, Trent Rodruck, Kiki Connell, AnneMarie Hansen, Morgan Haus, Kelsey Kane, Nia Litterer and Katlyn Marty.
“This is the most we’ve qualified since I’ve been the coach,” said Julie Marty, who took over the program three years ago.
