CHARLES CITY — Movie trivia time. Other than the humanitarian award he received in 1994, how many Oscar trophies has Paul Newman taken home from the Academy Awards.

Answer: One.

It was for his reprised role of “Fast Eddie” Felson in “The Color of Money”.

And what is the color of money?

Usually the felt covering a pool table.

Late last month was the time of the year where fine felt play yielded payouts as the Charles City Thursday Night 8-Ball League and Charles City Tuesday Night In-House League capped their seasons with awards banquet/tournaments at Hot Shots Billiards.

The winning team from the Thursday Night 8-Ball League, which includes teams based in Charles City, Rockford, Marble Rock and Osage, was “The Excuse” consisting of Denny Ungs, Jodee Ungs, Jasper Krueger, Kaleb Nauman, Joey Carroll, Jesse Steward and Bryan Brandau. Placing second in the 16-team league was “Hot Shots” followed by third-place finisher “10 Balls 5 Sticks”.

The champion of the six-team Tuesday Night In-House League which plays exclusively at Hot Shots was “Hot Shots” consisting of Joe Hull, Ryan Miller, Justin Stewart, Chris Freiberg and Jeff Buttjer.

Hot Shots owner Hull, who runs both leagues, won both of the singles tournaments during the end-of-season banquets. In the Thursday Night tournament, Hull placed ahead of Krueger; in the Tuesday Night tournament, Hull placed ahead of Justin Stewart and Miller.
