DES MOINES — About the time Charles City was posting top Top 10 performances in the Class 3A high jump with Ian Collins and Bradley Andrews placing 2nd and 10th, respectively, Comet sophomore Carly Stevenson placed 13th in the Class 3A girls discus.

Recently recovered from shoulder surgery last summer, Stevenson had qualified for her first high school state track meet with a first-place throw of 118 feet, 4 inches at last Friday’s joint qualifier at Comet Field.

In Des Moines, Stevenson’s best throw was 111 feet, 6 inches, which was about 3½ feet short of advancing her to the final round.

Lily Meester of Mount Vernon won the event with a throw of 130 feet, 1 inch. Going into the state meet, Meester had recorded the top throw in Class 3A with a heave of more than 134 feet.

Charles City sophomore Kiki Connell, in her second-straight state tourney appearance, placed 14th in the Class 3A girls 3,000-meter run with a time of 11 minutes, 44 seconds.

In the boys 4-by-110 shuttle hurdle relay, the Charles City foursome of John Sibuma, Cole Reams, Jeremiah Chapman and Dylan Koresh appeared to give themselves a reason to stick around Des Moines until Saturday for the finals in the event with a strong finish in their preliminary race. But the Class 3A preliminaries were plagued with disqualifications, and the Comets were among the teams flagged and, thus, didn’t advance.

Charles City also qualified a girls shuttle relay team, but even with a team season-best time of 1 minute, 10.33 seconds recorded by Lynn Hoeft, Alex Litterer, Liz Fiser and Hannah Lahner, it wasn’t enough to advance to the finals.

The Comets had a pair of 4-by-800 relays competing on Thursday. The team of Mason Deeter, Nick Litterer, Colton Slinger and Ian Collins placed 23rd in the Class 3A boys race. The team of Whitney Martin, Lydia Staudt, Marley Hagarty and Mackenzy Bilharz placed 24th in the Class 3A girls race.
