WAVERLY — For many of the graduating senior participants, Monday’s Class 3A Girls Golf Regional at Waverly Municipal Golf Course served as the last golf meet of their prep careers.

But some are due to be back, like Charles City sophomore Sarah Mitchell, who shaved four strokes of her previous career-best 18-hole score while shooting a 99 at the meet.
The score paced the Comets, who placed 11th tied with Iowa Falls-Alden with a team score of 427.

The top two teams advancing to the Class 3A state tournament May 28-29 at Otter Creek Golf Course in Ankeny are regional champion Dubuque Wahlert (335) and Xavier (339).
Dubuque Wahlert was led by sophomore Anna Nacos, whose 76 tied her with Clear Lake senior Ashley DeLong — the latter golfer was deemed the medalist by way of a card-back tiebreaker.

The champion Golden Eagles also got a 78 from Anna Jensen and an 83 from Mary Edwards.
Xavier was paced by Ellie Braksiek’s 79, and a pair of 83s from Libby Kramer and Kaitlin Hotchkiss.

Aside from Mitchell, other players due to return for Charles City from the regional lineup are junior Marissa Daniels, who shot a career-low 94 18-hole score to earn her All-Northwest Iowa Conference honors, sophomore Hope Slinger and freshman Brinn Lahr, who played herself into the varsity lineup this season.

Charles City seniors Kara Hoffman and Madee Tjaden are among those regional golfers who played their last high school match.

“I am very proud of the team and wish them well in the off season as they work to improve,” Charles City girls head golf coach Eric Johanningmeier said. “Kara Hoffman and Madelyn Tjaden have finished their careers as golfers …I am so very proud of their efforts and wish them well as they enter college.

“I would also like to thank Todd Forsyth for all his work as activities director. Without his support and help we could not function. Also a shout out to Moriah Mitchell, a former state champion, for all her help. THe girls and I cannot express how thankful we are for her help this season.”
