CHARLES CITY — To play a good villain, you often have to invoke treachery, greed, envy … and master a few dance moves.

That’s the requirement for Charles City senior Cassie Foxen, who has been selected to play Mrs. Potiphar, a bewitching hazard for the main character in “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” to be performed by the CCHS Drama Department this fall.

“I’m into hip-hop and pom dance, but my character does a challenging jazz dance routine,” said Foxen, who has been painstakenly rehearsing for the role.

Foxen is a fourth-year member of the Charles City Pom/Dance Team. You’ll may be seeing a lot of Foxen this Charles City Homecoming week as the dance team is preparing for a major halftime performance this Friday. Foxen also has been named to the Homecoming Court.

Foxen is already booked for performances well into next year as she recently was selected to be part of the All-Iowa Honor Dance Team, which will perform during the Iowa High School Girls Basketball Championships, March 2-7, at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

“I went to an audition in Ames (earlier this month), and there were about 500 dancers trying out,” Foxen said. “I was a little intimidated and nervous because there were so many good dancers.

“I was surprised I got picked.”

Foxen and fellow CC Pom/Dance co-captain Brookyn Tynam signed up for the team together when they were in eighth grade.

As a freshman member of the team, Foxen looked up to senior captain Hannah Menken as one of her role models. Menken is still dancing while studying at the University of Northern Iowa.

Foxen plans to dance, too, while going to college.

“But it will probably be for a club team,” said Foxen, who plans to go to either Iowa or Iowa State. “I would be hard to make their school dance teams.”
