CHARLES CITY — Volleyball matches tend traverse in peaks and valleys like a rollercoaster ride with teams often exchanging momentum on the way up and down.

Charles City’s Northeast Iowa Conference home match against Crestwood Tuesday at Comet Gym didn’t quite roll that way.

The Comets were dominant from start to finish as the upward arc of the match was always in their favor in their 3-0 win over the Cadets.

Crestwood did have a moment late in the third set when it pulled within 1 (19-18) while invoking the possibility of forcing a fourth set and avoiding the sweep. But the Comets eventually capped the set at 25-21 after winning the first two sets 25-15 and 25-9 to improve to 6-13 overall and 2-1 in the NEIC.

Most of Charles City’s losses this season have come in bunches in best-of-three-set matches at tournaments featuring some of the better teams in the state.

Crestwood fell to 11-8 and 0-3.

An ace by Danielle Stock gave Charles City an 9-2 lead in the first set. Consecutive aces by Toni Maloy helped extend the lead to 17-5 before a double blocking kill by Sadie Gebel and Marissa Daniels finished the set.

A Sarah Mitchell-to-Stock kill put the Comets up 16-7 in the second set before a pair of jump-serve aces by Rachel Chambers capped the set.

Mitchell set up Jennifer Martin for one of her team-leading kills to help put the Comets up 16-10 in the third set before the Cadets made their only serious run of the night.

The Comets are due to face some more tough tournament competition this weekend at Saturday’s invitational hosted by Cedar Falls.
