PARKERSBURG — During his junior year, Elliott Sinnwell was one of the best players on both sides of the ball on the Charles City football team.

Due to his concussion history and concerns, Sinnwell decided not to go out for football his senior year. Instead, he went out for cross country where he wasn’t one of the best runners on the squad as he often was relegated to compete in junior varsity races.

But thus far into the wrestling season, things appear to be working out “better in the long run” for Sinnwell.

“I’m much healthier right now … I’m in much better condition,” Sinnwell said. “Going out for cross country I believe has helped me this year.”

A 20-win wrestler last season, Sinnwell already has 11 victories against 2 losses this season. At the Keith Vry Invitational hosted by Aplington-Parkersburg on Saturday, Sinnwell went 3-0 including a fall victory over then-undefeated Fischer Ohrt of Don Bosco to win the 170-pound bracket.

Sinnwell was the lone boys champion at the invite for the Comets, who placed fourth — Don Bosco placed first well ahead of runner-up Crestwood.

In the final match of the day, Comet heavyweight Chase Crooks — who did play football for the Comets this past fall and was the lone sophomore named to the Class 3A-District 3 Offensive First Team — nearly seized a second individual title for Charles City but lost a 2-1 decision to Dike-New Hartford’s Jacob Loehr in a championship bout decided by a penalty point.

Comet junior Roush Jaeger lost a 5-1 decision in the 152-pound championship bout to Don Bosco’s Cael Frost, who placed fifth as a 138-pounder last year in the Class 1A portion of the State Wrestling Championships.

Other top-four podium placers for the Comet boys included sophomore 106-pounder Jacob Vais (4th), senior 132-pounder Bronson Forsyth (3rd), junior 138-pounder Alec Staudt (4th … medical forfeit in 3rd-place match) and sophomore 220-pounder Tino Tamayo (3rd).

In the girls portion of the tournament, Charles City boasted four division champions, including Kiki Connell — who like Sinnwell, also has run a little XC, Lily Luft, Allie Cross and Kalysta Rodriguez.

Charles City also had a pair of runners-up — Emma Perez, who placed second to Connell in their division, and Toni Maloy, who lost to former teammate Emma Grimm of Osage in their championship bout.

Last season, Grimm was a member of the Charles City girls squad that placed third at the inaugural Girls State Wrestling Championships.
